How Calmplot Uses AI

Calmplot uses AI to help you reflect on your journal entries, see patterns in your life, and suggest tiny next steps.

This page explains, in plain language, what we send to AI, what we don't do, and what you stay in control of.

📤 1. What we send to AI

When you ask Calmplot for a reflection or a weekly garden review, we send:

  • The text of the entry or a small batch of your recent entries
  • The life areas linked to those entries (like Work, Health, Relationships)
  • Simple metadata such as date, mood, and energy

We send this to OpenAI over an encrypted connection so the model can generate summaries, emotional reflections, and suggestions.

📥 2. What AI sends back

OpenAI's model sends back text – things like:

  • A short summary of what you wrote
  • Possible emotions you might be feeling
  • Ideas for tiny experiments or next steps
  • Weekly "garden stories" that describe how your life areas have been growing

Calmplot stores these reflections in our database so we can show them back to you in the app.

🧠 2.5. How your coach remembers your story

To help the AI coach remember patterns across weeks and months, Calmplot creates:

  • Entry summaries: A 2-4 sentence condensed version of each entry, plus extracted tags for people mentioned (like "Danya" or "my manager") and recurring topics (like "burnout" or "conflict").
  • Embeddings: A mathematical representation of each summary that lets us find similar moments from your past entries when generating reflections.
  • Connections: Discovered patterns across multiple entries, like "Arguments with Danya tend to happen when you're exhausted from work." These are generated by analyzing your summaries and shown in your Connections page.

Your raw journal entries are never sent to OpenAI for long-term storage. Only summaries and tags are used to create connections. You can hide individual entries from AI insights or clear all coach memory from Settings.

🔒 3. How OpenAI handles your data

We use OpenAI as our AI provider. Your data is sent to their API for processing, and as of now their API data usage policy says:

  • API data is not used to train their models.
  • Data is stored for a limited time to monitor for abuse and improve reliability.

If their policies change in the future, we'll update this page and our Privacy Policy.

🚫 4. What we don't do

There are a few things we simply don't do with your journal:

  • We don't sell your entries or use them to show ads.
  • We don't share your entries with other users.
  • We don't train our own machine learning models on your raw journal content at this stage.

Right now, your words are used only to show you your own reflections and garden, and to generate the AI responses you explicitly request.

5. What you control

You stay in control of your Calmplot:

  • You choose what to write about and how often.
  • You don't have to use AI on every entry if you don't want to.
  • You can hide individual entries from AI insights and coach memory.
  • You can hide or acknowledge individual connections/patterns.
  • You can clear all coach memory (summaries, people, connections) from Settings.
  • You can delete individual entries.
  • You can delete your entire account and data from inside the app.
  • You can download a copy of your journal (in a simple format) if you decide to leave.

Our goal is to make Calmplot a safe, respectful place for your inner life, not another data grab.
